Tulsa, Okla. - PennWell Corp. (December 4, 2012) --- A Federal Reserve analyst has signed on to meet in January with a select group of electric utility industry insiders during the fourth annual Electric Light & Power Executive Conference. Discussions likely will turn to how the by-then failed or averted fiscal cliff, President Obama’s second term and a stagnant U.S. economy will affect electric utilities and the housing market.
“We’re thrilled Danielle DiMartino Booth from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas will be speaking again with utility executives during the Electric Light & Power Executive,” said Teresa Hansen, conference chairwoman and editor in chief of the industry’s 90-year-old Electric Light & Power magazine. “Danielle shared her economic predictions two years ago in San Diego along with Stuart Varney. She’s a must-see during these economic times.”
DiMartino Booth briefs policymakers and researchers—including those at the White House—and writes and speaks about the interaction of the economy and financial markets. She will present Sunday, Jan. 27, the first day of the two-day conference.
Immediately following DiMartino Booth will be keynote speaker Michael Reagan, eldest son of President Ronald Reagan, who will speculate what the Gipper’s game plan might have been during the current economic and political environments.
“Michael Reagan is a staple in the conservative movement, so it should be moving to hear his interpretation of how his father might have dealt with today’s challenges,” Hansen said. “But don’t expect a one-sided conference. We’re also pleased to welcome speakers from the Environmental Defense Fund, the Department of Energy and even Hollywood. We expect to hear solutions to utility challenges from all sides.”
In addition, Electric Light & Power Executive Conference panels will address: smart grid spending; how to create a compelling image and message; utility flexibility and value; and preparing for disruptive events.
The Electric Light & Power Executive Conference is Jan. 27 and 28 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. It leads into North America’s No. 1 smart grid conference, DistribuTECH Conference & Exhibition.
Southern Company Named No. 1 Utility in North America
Pepco’s Rigby, Navajo Tribal Utility Authority’s Haase Are Best CEOs
TULSA, Okla. Dec. 17, 2012/PennWell Corp. — Electric utility giant Southern Company has been named the No. 1 electric utility in North America by Electric Light & Power magazine. The 90-year-old voice of the electric utility industry also announced two Utility CEOs of the Year: Pepco Holdings Inc. (PHI) Chairman of the Board, President and CEO Joseph M. Rigby and Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA) General Manager Walter W. Haase.
Rigby, Haase and Southern Company Chairman of the Board, President and CEO Thomas A. Fanning will accept their awards Jan. 27 in San Diego during the fourth annual Electric Light & Power Executive Conference, the executive preview of North America’s No. 1 smart grid show, DistribuTECH Conference & Exhibition.
“Southern Company flourished in 2012 under Mr. Fanning’s leadership,” said Teresa Hansen, Electric Light & Power editor in chief. “He and his employees drove the fourth-largest utility in the United States to achieve high rankings in market capitalization, innovation, construction, job creation and customer satisfaction reports, despite expected coal plant retirements next year and tough political and economic times.”
Rigby won in the Large Utility CEO of the Year division, open to North American electric utilities with 400,000 customers or more. Haase won in the Small Utility CEO of the Year division, open to North American electric utilities with fewer than 400,000 customers.
“Mr. Rigby has taken innumerable measures against cybersecurity threats against the electric grid in the nation’s capital, and Mr. Haase has made electricity available to members of the Navajo Nation who had been living without it,” Hansen said. “These leaders should not only be recognized for their ingenuity, but also imitated throughout the electric industry. They’re protecting lives and providing a better quality of life for Americans.”
A feature article on Southern Company appears in the November-December issue of Electric Light & Power magazine, and another on Rigby and Haase will appear in the January-February issue.
Atlanta-based Southern Company serves some 4.4 million customers in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida through four retail operating companies: Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power and Mississippi Power.
Washington, D.C.,-based PHI has some 2 million customers in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland and New Jersey. PHI subsidiaries Pepco, Delmarva Power and Atlantic City Electric provide regulated electricity service; Delmarva Power also provides natural gas service. PHI also provides energy efficiency and renewable energy services through Pepco Energy Services.
NTUA, based in Fort Defiance, Ariz., serves some 39,400 electric customers and 193 photovoltaic customers. NTUA purchases electrical power off the Navajo Nation and transmits that power to homes throughout northern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico and southeastern Utah. Even as NTUA works hard to meet the basic utility needs of the Navajo Nation, an estimated 16,000 families remain without access to electricity, and many more homes and families are without access to basic infrastructure such as telephones, water, wastewater and natural gas services.
TULSA, Okla. (January 11, 2013) - Leaders from North American electric utilities will meet Jan. 28 in San Diego to discuss how far utilities should go to prepare for disruptive events such as Hurricane Sandy and winter weather.
The session, “Preparing for Disruptive Events: How Far Should You Go?” is part of the fourth annual Electric Light & Power Executive Conference. This year the conference is Jan. 27 and 28 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront.
“This session couldn’t be more relevant post-Sandy and in the dead of winter,” said Teresa Hansen, conference chairwoman and editor in chief of Electric Light & Power magazine. “When customers lose power—no matter the reason—patience is tested and utilities are left scrambling to restore power safely and quickly. To combat these outages, utilities could harden their grids, but to what extent, and how much are customers willing to pay for better reliability?”
Experts weighing in on the discussion will include moderator Ivo Hug, marketing manager of power delivery and utilization at the Electric Power Research Institute; David Geier, vice president of electric operations at San Diego Gas & Electric; Paul Centolella, vice president of Analysis Group; and Elin Swanson Katz, consumer counsel at the Connecticut Office of Consumer Counsel.
Other sessions will address: smart grid spending; the state of the economy; how to create a compelling image and message; and utility flexibility and value. Keynote speakers are best-selling author Michael Reagan and former professional baseball player Jim Abbott.
